emerging technology Flashcards
what are cooperatives
a farm, business, or other organization which is owned and run jointly by its members, who share the profits or benefits.
what is market pull
the need/requirement for a new product or a solution to a problem, which comes from the market place.
what is market push
when research and development in new tech , drives the development of new products.
what is just in time manufacturing
JIT saves money by ordering just enough materials, so money is saved by not having to store stock and there is minimal waste. Flexible Manufacturing Systems create products through an assembly line
what is crowdfunding
Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people. Crowdfunding is a form of crowdsourcing and of alternative finance.
what is fairtrade
it is about ensuring decent working conditions, better pay and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers.
what is CAD
computer aided design,
is the use of computer software to create, modify, analyze, or optimize designs. It allows for the digital creation of 2D drawings and 3D models of products, facilitating simulations and visualizations before physical manufacturing.
what is CAM
computer aided manufacturing, the use of software and computer-controlled machinery to automate manufacturing processes, effectively transforming Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models into physical components.
what are examples of CAD and CAM
CAD - any software that allows you to design like Crayo ai , AutoCAD , catia
CAM - 3d printers , laser cutters , water jet cutters , robotics
what is fms
it is a flexible manufacturing system, which can be easily reconfigured to produce different products.
CNC machines and robot arms are used frequently, Both are easily programmable and can perform a range of tasks.
what is planned obselence
Planned obsolescence is when a product is deliberately designed to have a specific life span. This is usually a shortened life span. The product is designed to last long enough to develop a customer’s lasting need
what are examples of planned obselence in objects
Mobile phones are another good example of this. Phones may be designed with limited storage or software may be developed that is too advanced for a particular model. This encourages people to purchase the newest model.
what is design for maintenance
Maintainability is the degree to which a product allows safe, quick and easy replacement of its component parts.
Products are increasingly becoming more complex meaning that they are more difficult to fix at home, particularly electronics. Things are designed in this way to encourage people to either buy a replacement or spend money having products fixed by the very company that initially made it.
what is an example of an object made for maintenance
Apple are a good example of this. If you damage a product such as crack the screen on a phone, Apple is the only company you are guaranteed to ensure a perfect outcome from. Getting it fixed by another company will mean the parts will not be official Apple components and the product is automatically out of warranty.
what is LCA
it is a systematic process for evaluating the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life, from raw material extraction through production, use, and disposal (or recycling).
