Neutralization and the pH scale Flashcards
What are alkalis?
Alkalis are soluble hydroxides.
What are bases?
Substances that can neutralize acids. Metal oxides and metal hydroxides are bases.
What is neutral?
When a substance is neither acidic or alkaline.
Why are acids acidic?
All acids release H+(aq) ions into solution when added to water.
What makes a solution alkaline?
All alkalis form aqueous hydroxide ions, OH- (aq), when added to water. It is these excess OH- ions that make a solution alkaline.
What are indicators?
Substances that changes color when you add them to acids or alkalis.
What do we use the pH scale for?
To show how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Runs from 0 (most acidic)to 14 (most alkaline)
What number on the pH scale is neutral?
7
