Neurotransmitters Flashcards
1
Q
dopamine
A
- pleasure, satisfaction, addiction, movement, motivation
2
Q
Serotonin
A
- well-being, happiness, regulates sleep cycle, regulates intestinal movements
- Low serotonin = depression, anxiety
- Antidepressants increase serotonin levels
- Exercise and light also increase serotonin.
3
Q
GABA
A
- major inhibitory neurotransmitter of brain
- calm firing nerves in CNS
- high GABA = high focus and relaxation
- low GABA = anxiety, and epilepsy
- GABA also contributes to motor control and vision
4
Q
Acetylcholine
A
- principal neurotransmitter for thought, learning and memory
- activates muscle action
- low = Alzheimer’s
5
Q
Endorphins
A
- released in the brain during exercise, excitement, pain, and sexual activity
- produce a feeling of well-being or even euphoria
6
Q
Epinephrine
A
- inhibits memory
- high awareness + physical boost
- airway dilation, high BP, high HR, high O2 to lungs
7
Q
Norepinephrine
A
- attention and response
- fight or flight
8
Q
Glutamate
A
- most common NRTM
- brain fns like learn + memory
- brain dvlpment
- causes nerve contractions
- too much = brain damage
