Neurotransmitters Flashcards
Neurotransmitters and their effects
Dopamine (DA)
involved in fine motor skills, integration of emotions and thoughts, decision making, and stimulates hypothalamus to release hormones
Norepinephrine (NE)
affects mood, attention, and arousal and stimulates the sympathetic branch “ fight or flight” in response to stress
Serotonin (5-HT)
plays a role in sleep regulation, hunger, mood states and pain perception, hormonal activity, aggression and sexual behavior
Histamine (H)
involved in alertness, inflammatory response and stimulates gastric secretion
GABA
plays a role in inhibition, reduces aggression, excitation and anxiety, may also play a role in pain perception, has anticonvulsant and muscle relaxing properties, may impair cognition and psychomotor functioning
Glutamate
Excitatory, AMPA plays role in learning and memory
Acetylcholine (ACh)
plays role in learning and memory, stimulates PNS “rest and digest”, affects sexual and aggressive behavior
