Neurotransmitters Flashcards
Acetylcholine
Excitatory (fire off) to skeletal system and excitatory (fire off) or inhibitory (settle down) to all other locations. Secreted from both CNS & PNS
Dopamine
Generally excitatory (fire off) causing voluntary movement and emotion. Secreted by the CNS & PNS
Serotonin
Generally inhibitory (settle down) causing sleep, secreted by CNS
Norepinephrine
Can be excitatory (fire off) or inhibitory (settle down), secreted by both the CNS and PNS to help with wakefulness
GABA
Is inhibitory (settle down), secreted by CNS for motor behaviour
Stimulants
Mimic excitatory (fire off) neurotransmitters or make membrane more permeable to sodium
Example- Caffeine, nicotine
Depressants
inhibit (settle down) excitatory neurotransmitter or make membrane less permeable to sodium
Examples alcohol & opiates
Hallucinogens
Work strictly on the brain and mimic brain neurotransmitters.
Examples Cannabis & LSD
