Neurosurgery Flashcards
What is a neuro pattie used for?
Absoption/ fluid management and protection
In the U.S.A. what product class is a neuro pattie?
Class three Class III – These devices usually sustain or support life, are implanted, or present potential unreasonable risk of illness or injury. Examples of Class III devices include implantable pacemakers and breast implants. 10% of medical devices fall under this category.
Are neuro patties used in endovascular neurosurgery?
NO - Endovascular neurosurgery involves passing small catheters through an artery in the groin or wrist and navigating them to blood vessels in the brain. Once they have reached the brain, the endovascular neurosurgeon can use a series of devices to repair problems in arteries and veins within the head.
What is a craniotomy?
A surgical operation in which a bone flap is temporarily removed from the skull to access the brain
What defines a “microsurgical craniotomy”
Craniotomy performed with a microscope is referred to as microsurgical craniotomy
Can neuro patties be used in all procedures that require a craniotomy?
Yes
What is considered minimally invasive – endovascular or vascular neurosurgery?
Endovascular - using coiling technique for treating aneurysms rather than a craniotomy to clip an aneurysm
What is an aneurysm?
a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain. It often looks like a berry hanging on a stem
What does the IFU of neuro patties state must be done before use?
be soaked in saline, neuro patties should never be put in the operating site dry.
What is a gossypiboma?
A gossypiboma, also called textiloma refers to a foreign object, such as a mass of cotton or a sponge, that is left behind in a body cavity during surgery.
What is CSF?
Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear, colorless body fluid found within the tissue that surrounds the brain and spinal cord of all vertebrates.
Is a Acoustic Neuroma a disease or a procedure?
Disease. Acoustic neuroma, also known as vestibular schwannoma, is a noncancerous and usually slow-growing tumor that develops on the main (vestibular) nerve leading from your inner ear to your brain. Branches of this nerve directly influence your balance and hearing, and pressure from an acoustic neuroma can cause hearing loss, ringing in your ear and unsteadiness.
When a doctor says “Endoscopic or Endoscopy” what does he mean?
Endoscopy is the insertion of a long, thin tube directly into the body with a camera on the end to see.
What is Dura matter?
The dura mater often gets referred to as merely the dura. It is one of the layers of connective tissue that make up the meninges of the brain (pia, arachnoid, and dura, from inside to outside). It is the outermost layer of the three meninges that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
