Neuroscience- MS Patient Demonstration Flashcards
Define multiple sclerosis.
A chronic inflammatory disease of the
central nervous system of unknown cause
causing oligodendroglial and axonal
pathology
Describe the onset and symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
– Usually presents in young adults aged 20-40 years
– Can involve any neurological function – most commonly sensory, motor
and visual symptoms
Describe the clinical course of secondary progressive MS
MS typically begins as relapsing-remitting disorder, evolves into
progressive course
How is MS diagnosed?
– Primarily based on clinical history
– Supported by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cerebrospinal
fluid (CSF) analysis showing inflammatory abnormalities
Describe the pathophysiology of MS
– Cause unknown
– Inflammation and loss of myelin in the CNS
Describe the therapy of MS
- Immuno-modulatory and immuno-suppressive treatments (introduced in
the 1990’s) reduce relapses. - Effect on long-term evolution and on
progressive MS remains unclear.
