Neuroradiology Flashcards
Imaging techniques
Skull x rays
CT
MR
Cerebral angiography
Other techniques
CT is imaging choice for
Head trauma
Intracerebral haemorrhage
Acute stroke
Benefits of CT-
Examination takes 5-19 minutes (scan takes 39 secs)
Good visualisation of the brain
Volumetric acquisition reconstructed as 5 mm axial slices
MRI procedure
W-3 sequences in different planes
T2 and T1 +/- contrast
Contraindications occur
Some people are claustrophobic which is a problem for the imaging
MRI is sensitive in detecting
Cerebral or dam Gliosis Encephalitis Plaques of demyelination Acute infarcts
What colour is bone on MR
Black
T2 weighted imagine look like?
White matter darker than grey matter
T1 weighted scan
Grey matter darker than white matter
Flair scan
Like a 52 scan but with dark space in middle (cerebral spinal fluid)
Cerebral angiography
Usually done under local anaesthetic
Catheter introduced into femoral artery and tip positioned in to the carotid and vertebral
Small (0.1%-1%) chance of stroke
Scan patients with headache?
Most patients don’t need a scan
Tension headache
Migraine
Cranial arteritis
Sinusitis
