Neuropsychology-parts of the brain Flashcards
What is the upper part of the brain called and what is the outer cortex?
Upper part of brain os the cerebrum. It has an outer cortex which acts as a shell around the brain
Why does the outer cortex have lots of folds?
To increase surface area, which allows the brain to have more cells so it can control more functions
How does the brain communicate with the rest of the body?
Through the spinal cord. Information passes from the brain the the spinal cord through the brainstem (which also controls reflexes)
What does the frontal lobe do?
Plays a vital role in decision making, controlling impulses, problem solving and concentration
What is the role of he motor cortex in the frontal lobe?
Controls voluntary movements
What does the temporal lobe do?
Helps us with hearing, understanding and creating sounds
What does the parietal lobe do?
Plays a big role in perception (eg. facial recognition)
The somatosensory cortex is responsible for our sense of touch
What does the occipital lobe do?
Processes visual information (often referred to as the visual cortex)
What does the cerebellum do?
Plays a vital role in movement, coordination and balance (motor skills)
What is asymmetrical function?
The idea that the two hemispheres look similar but control different functions (right hem - left side of body and vice versa)
Left - Lang
Right - spatial awareness
Why are females better at multitasking?
Evidenced suggests that females have a thicker corpus callosum (connects the two hemispheres) so they are better at using both sides of the brain for tasks
