Neuropsychology Flashcards
nervous system, neurons, brain functions
Name the 2 parts of the nervous system.
Peripheral and central nervous systems
Name the 2 parts of the central nervous system
brain and spinal cord.
Name the 2 parts of the peripheral nervous system.
Autonomic and somatic
Name the 2 parts of the autonomic nervous system.
Parasympathetic and sympathetic.
Name the 2 parts of the somatic nervous system.
sensory and motor.
Describe the spinal/reflex Response
Nerves in spinal cord capable of initiating a simple response independently of the brain called a spinal reflex. Spinal reflexes are adaptive – they save time and minimise harm, could save your life.
Sympathetic Nervous system functions?
Dominant in times of ‘stress’. Increases: Heart rate, Bloody pressure, Sweat. Decreases: Urine production, Digestion.
Parasympathetic Nervous System functions?
Dominant in times of ‘peace’.
Increases: Urine production, Digestion, Hormone regulation. Decreases: Heart rate, Blood pressure.
What is synapse
Neurons send information to other neurons at the synaptic gap. The point of communication is called the synapse. Once the electrical message reaches the axon terminal a chemical process occurs. The chemicals released from the synaptic knob of neurons are called neurotransmitters.
