Cognition Flashcards
amnesia, types of memory, rehearsal, recall & recognition
Name the 2 kinds of Interference
Retroactive and proactive
Retroactive means?
New information interferes with our ability to recall old information.
Proactive means?
Old information interferes with our ability to recall new information.
Context dependent retrieval means?
Context dependent cues are signals e.g. sights, sounds, smells, tastes that were present in the setting (context) where we first formed the memory. For example: a certain smell can bring to mind memories that we had otherwise ‘forgotten’.
2 types of amnesia
Retrograde and anterograde.
3 types of memory
Episodic, semantic and declarative.
Rehearsal
A conscious effort to retain information. Rehearsal extends the time of recall e.g. repeating a phone number of a persons name.
Iconic memory
Memory stored in visual images in their original (uncoded) sensory form for about 0.33 seconds.
Recall vs Recognition
Recall: Involves bringing information back to conscious awareness with limited cues.
Recognition: Involves being able to identify relevant information from a set of alternatives.
