Neurophysiology - Jaw reflex Flashcards

1
Q

What are 3 types of stimuli for inhibitory jaw reflex?

Q

What are the responses of inhibitory jaw reflex?

A

activation of jaw opening muscles (sub-primates only)

inactivation of jaw closing muscles (only response in primates)

7
Q

Why are there 2 inhibitory jaw reflexes when you tap on a tooth?

A

it activates both nociceptors and mechano-receptors

mechanoreceptor pathway shuts down the trigeminal motor nucleus pathway which is clenching the jaw. the descending pathway

the jaw closes again

the nociceptor pathway then shuts down the descending pathway from the trigeminal motor nucleus and jaw opens

it isn’t as clear cut and the pathways can interchange

9
Q

Why is the trigeminal motor nucleus activated in this experiment?

A

the patient is keeping tension slightly biting an during the massester muscle to do so

15
Q

What is the role of the inhibitory jaw reflex?

A

protective function

  • prevent overloading of: periodontium, masticatory muscles, TMJ
  • FACILITATE JAW OPEIING TO EXCPEL NOXIOUS MATERIAL (FISH BONE)

FACILITATE JAW OPEIING TO MINIMISE DAMAGE TO LIPS

16
Q

What is the jaw unloading reflex stimulus?

A

sudden jaw closure following hard biting

17
Q

What is teh response of jaw unloading reflex?

A

inactivation of jaw closing muscles

activation of jaw opening muscles (i.e. jaw opening)

18
Q

What is the pathway of jaw unloading reflex?

A

unknown but probably:

jaw closing muscle spindles
interneurons
jaw muscle motorneurones

19
Q

What pathway is causing the forceful bite?

A

jaw jerk pathway

20
Q

What does the jaw jerk pathway send inhibitory signals to?

A

to the jaw opening pathway, to promote the jaw closing

21
Q

What is the first thing that happens when loading is removed in the jaw unloading reflex? (strong bit)

A

shrinkage in the muscle spindle

  1. inhibition in the closing muscles and…
  2. activation of the jaw opening muscles
