Neurons/nervous sytem Flashcards
structure of nervous stystem
nervous system - peripheral nervous system: brain/spinal cord - central nervous system >somatic >autonomic: sympathetic/parasympathetic
roles
spinal cord:
PNS:
SNS:
Sympathetic:
Parasympathetic:
spinal cord: connects brain and PNS
PNS: carries messages to/from CNS
SNS: voluntary muscles, sensory info to CNS
Sympathetic: arouses body to expend energy
Parasympathetic: calms body to conserve energy
sensory neurons
motor neurons
interneurons
sensory: send information from sensory receptors like nose/mouth - only in PNS
motor: carry messages from CNS to muscles and organs - only in PNS
interneurons: link between sensory/motor neurons and CNS - only in brain/CNS
anatomy of a neutron
cell membrane - protects cell
nucleus - brain of cell
dendrites - receive message and signals
cell body (soma)
axon
myelin sheath - protects and allows messages to pass through quickly
axon terminal
Synapses - send off signals
