Neurons And Neurotransmission Flashcards
Sensory neurons
Receptors such as eyes, ears , tongue and skin
Carry nerve impulses to spinal cord and brain
When reach brain translated to sensations like vision, hearing, taste and touch
Relay neurons
Found between sensory input and motor output
To communicate
Motor neurons
Found in CNS
Control muscle movement
When stimulated they release neurotransmitters bind to receptors on muscles to trigger response
Parts of neurons
Dendrites- receive signals from other neurons or from sensory receptor cells
Axon- long slender fibre, carries nerve impulses , form electrical signal known as action potential
Axon terminal- where axon ends, connects neurons to other neurons using process synaptic transmission
Myelin sheath- insulates axon so electrical impulses travel faster along axon
Synaptic transmission
Passed down the axon of the neutron as an electrical impulses, action potential need to be transferred to another another neuron or tissue, must cross over between pre synaptic and post synaptic neuron, end of neuron are synaptic vesicles containing chemical messages known as neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters carry signal across synaptic gap, excitatory neurotransmitters (make post synaptic call more Likely to Fire), inhibitory neurotransmitter ( make less likely to fire)
