Neurons Flashcards
What are the functions of neurons?
Can communicate with each other as well as other cells/organs of the body.
Does action potential.
What are the characteristics of neurons?
Extremely long-lived.
After a certain point in development, they no longer divide.
Have a very high metabolic rate.
What are Nissl bodies?
Large amounts of rough ER in cell body of a neuron.
What are dendrites?
Where synapses come in and form on neuron.
What are axons?
Where action potential is produced.
What is the axon hillock?
Where action potential starts.
What is an Anaxonic neuron?
It looks like it doesn’t have an axon.
What is a bipolar neuron?
Two processes coming off cell body (dendrite, axon)
What is a pseudounipolar neuron?
Cell body is to the side with one continuous process attached to it with the dendrite and axon attached at either end.
What is a multipolar neuron?
Numerous dendrites and axon coming off cell body.
What are sensory neurons?
Carry signals to CNS.
What are interneurons?
Perform integration. Found only in CNS.
What are Motor neurons?
Sends signals to body from CNS.
What are neurons?
The basic cells of the nervous system.
