Neurons Flashcards
What does a cell body include?
A nucleus.
Where do dendrites protrude from?
The cell body.
What is the purpose of dendrites?
Carry nerve impulses from neighbouring neurons towards the cell body.
What is the purpose of an axon?
Carries impulses away from the cell body to the terminal buttons.
What is the axon covered in?
Myelin Sheath.
What is the purpose of myelin sheath?
- Protects the axon.
- Speeds up the electrical transmission of the impulse.
What are the gaps that the myelin sheath has called?
Nodes of Ranvier.
What is the purpose of nodes of ranvier?
Speed up the impulse by forcing it to ‘jump’ across gaps.
What is at the end of the axon?
Terminal buttons.
What is the purpose of the terminal buttons?
To communicate about the next neuron in the chain with the dendrites.
What is the reflex arc?
- Info is picked up by the sensory neuron.
- This sends a signal to the CNS.
- The signal is then passed to a relay neuron.
- The relay neurons send the signal around the CNS to a motor neuron.
- The motor neurons send the signal away from the CNS to the effectors to carry out the relfex action.
