Nervous System Divisions Flashcards
What is the Nervous System made up of?
- Central Nervous System.
- Peripheral Nervous System.
What is the Central Nervous System made up of?
- Brain.
- Spinal cord.
What is the Peripheral Nervous System made up of?
All nerves outside the Central Nervous System.
What is the purpose of the Peripheral Nervous System?
To transmit messages to and from the Central Nervous System via neurons.
What are the two divisions of the Peripheral Nervous Sytem?
- Somatic Nervous System.
- Autonomic Nervous System.
What is controlled by the Somatic Nervous System?
- Voluntary actions.
- Such as writing, running, and waving.
What is controlled by the Autonomic Nervous System?
- Involuntary actions.
- Such as heart beats and intestines digesting.
What are the two divisions of the Autonomic Nervous Sytem?
- Sympathetic Nervous System.
- Parasympathetic Nervous System.
What do the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System have in common?
They regulate the same bodily organs.
Why do the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System have opposite effects?
They release different neurotransmitters.
What is the purpose of the Sympathetic Nervous System?
- Triggers the adrenal medulla to release adrenaline.
- Prepares the body for fight or flight.
What is the purpose of the Parasympathetic Nervous System?
- Releases acetylcholine.
- This has an inhibitory effect which reverses the chnages of the SNS.
- Calms the body down.
