Neurons Flashcards
What are Electrical Impulses?
Refers to how signals are sent within a neuron (action potential)
What are Chemical Impulses?
Refers to how signals are sent between neurons (neurotransmitters)
What are the structures of a neuron?
- Dendrites
- Cell body (Soma)
- Nucleus
- Axon
- Myelin sheath
- Nodes of Ranvier
- Axon terminal
What are the location, function and structures of the Sensory Neuron?
Location: Somatic division of PNS
Function: Converts stimuli from sensory organs into electrical impulses that are sent to relay neurons in the CNS
Structures: Long dendrites, short axons
What are the location, function and structures of the Relay Neuron?
Location: CNS
Function: Receives sensation from Sensory neurons, decides how to respond, then sends that decision to Motor neurons in the PNS
Structures; Short dendrites, typically short axons
What are the location, function and structures of the Motor Neuron?
Location: Somatic and autonomic divisions of PNS
Function: Transmits information from relay neurons away from CNS to skeletal muscles to move. Also connects with organs and glands to maintain bodily processes e.g breathing
Structures: Short dendrites, Long axons
