Neurons Flashcards
Axon: A stem-like protrusion
Carry electrical impulses that are the means of communication within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body.
Dendrite: Branch-looking structures attached to the edges of the neuron
Collects and stores all incoming information from axon terminal
Soma: The body
Contains the nucleus and other structures common to living cells
Gilal Cells: Web-looking
A type of cell that provides physical and chemical support to neurons and maintain their environment
Myelin Sheath: Pencil cushion
The small, fatty, gilal protectors of the axon spine.
Terminal Buttons: Small nubs at the end of axon
Found at the end of the axon, they carry signals across the synapse to other neurons.
Neurotransmitters: Very small
They carry chemical signals from one neuron to the next target cell
A Synapse: The gap between neurons (broad)
The places where neurons “connect” and communicate with each other
Synaptic Cleft: The gap between two neurons (20nm)
Allows nerve impulses to pass from one neuron to the other
Presynaptic Neuron: #1
The transmitter– what sends the signal
Postsynaptic Neuron: #2
The receiver– what gets and then stores the signal
Receptor Sites: Literally everywhere
Proteins which are able to recognize and bond to specific messenger molecules.
