Neurons Flashcards
Neurons
cells that transmit nerve impulses in the body
Sensory or afferent neurons
bring info from sensory organs and receptors in the eyes, tongue, skin, ears, internal organs to CNS
Motor or efferent neurons
take nerve pulses from the CNS to give commands to muscles, organs, glands, and other target cells
Association or interneurons
-only in brain and spinal cord.
-makeup most neurons in the body
-connect sensory and motor neurons together
Cell body of neuron
-nucleus and cell organelle
-Nissl body: the rough endoplasmic reticulum
Dendrites
receive stimuli that trigger action potential
Axon
-wrapped in fatty material called myelin made from Schwann cells
-myelin acts like insulation around a wire
Synapse
gap that separates nerves from muscles, organs, glands, and other nerves
Neurotransmitters
chemicals that travel across synapse to stimulate or inhibit nerve impulses
Which nervous system relies on norepinephrine?
Peripheral nervous system (controls autonomic functions)
