Cranial Nerves
-help brain communicate with rest of body
-the nerves start or end in the brain and pass through foramina (openings) in the skull
Olfactory
smell
Optic
sight
Oculomotor
-mostly motor
-movement of eyelid
-controls how much light we see
-changes lens shape
Trochlear
Ability to move your eyes up and down or back and forth
Trigeminal
ophthalmic (eye) and maxillary (mouth) branches are mostly sensory
Abducens
motor nerve for the eyes lateral rectus muscle and proprioception
Facial
mixed nerve for secretion of saliva, tears, taste, facial muscles, and proprioception
Vestibulocochlear
-sensory nerve for cochlear branch for hearing
-vestibular branch for equilibrium and balance
Glossopharyngeal
mixed nerve for taste, movement of tongue, saliva, swallowing, and pain in tongue to throat
Vagus
-long mixed nerve that runs down torso
-parasympathetic smooth muscle control of heart, lungs, and pancreas secretions
Accessory
mostly motor nerve for swallowing, head movement, and proprioception
Hypoglossal
-motor nerve for speech, swallowing, and other tongue movements, along with proprioception
