Q

What is the function of the myelin sheath?

A

It is a layer of fat and protein that acts as an insulator so that impulses travel faster

Q

What happens after the impulses reach the axon terminal of the presynaptic neurone?

A

Vesicles move towards and fuse with the presynaptic membrane, releasing neurotransmitters into the synapse

12
Q

What happens after neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse?

A

They bind to receptor molecules on the postsynaptic membrane. This generates an electrical impulse at the dendrite of the postsynaptic neurone. It is transmitted down the neurone.

16
Q

What is a nerve impulse?

A

An electrical signal that passes along nerve cells called neurones

17
Q

Why are synapses useful in a reflex arc?

A

They ensure that nerve impulses travel in one direction only
