Focusing light Flashcards
Which parts carry out refraction in the eye?
The lens and the cornea
What is accomodation?
The adjustment of the shape of the lens to focus light
Why can images appear upside down on the retina?
Light rays cross over as they reach the retina
What happens when light rays come from a distant object?
They are almost parallel and won’t refract much. The lens will be thinner.
What happens when light rays come from a nearby object?
They are diverging and will need to bend inwards quite strongly. The lens will be thicker.
What controls the shape of the lens?
Suspensory ligaments controlled by ciliary muscles
What happens when ciliary mucles contract?
The suspensory ligaments are loosened and the lens gets thicker
What happens when ciliary muscles relax?
Suspensory ligaments are tightened and the lens gets thinner
