Rapid automatice response to a stimulus which is not under conscience control

Advatnatges of simple reflexes
A
- Fast and short pathway with few neurones
- Protect us from harmful stimuli
- Involuntary - leaving the brain free to carry out more complex responses
- Innate - Not learnt and immediatly protect organism from birth

What is resting potential?
A
occurs when neurone is at rest and the outside of the membrane is more positivly charged compared to the inside which is more negativly charged = polarised

How is resting potential maintained?
A
- Membrane is 100x more peermeable to K+ then Na+
- For every 2K+ pumped in 3Na+ are pumped out
- electrochemical gradient is established
