neurones Flashcards
neurones are aka
nerve cells
what do neurones do?
carry electrical signals in the nervous system
what are three examples of different neurones?
sensory, motor, relay (intermediate)
what are dendrons?
extend from the cell body of the neuron, branches off to form dendrites
what is the purpose of dendrites?
to receive signals
what does the cell body contain?
nucleus and other organelles (proteins are made, and carries out normal cell functions like mitochondria to make ATP)
what does the axon do?
carries electrical signals away from the cell body to the synapses
what do synapses do?
purpose is to pass the electric signal onto the next cell
what do sensory neurones do?
take info from a receptor and pass it to other neurones and then to the CNS (brain and spinal chord)
sensory goes from and to where?
from receptor to CNS
sensory neurons structure?
signals travel from dendron to cell body to synapse and to the next cell
what is the purpose of relay neurones?
to pass signals between neurones
how are they adapted to their function?
highly branched dendrites and axons so can make various connections to pass on signals
where do motor neurons receive signals from?
relay or sensory neurons
what is the purpose of motor neurones?
to contact effectors
