exam questions Flashcards
suggest why there are two systems of stimulus detection?
both use a different types of detection and require different adaptations to receptor cells
state how electroreception is different from other forms of sensory reception?
other sensory receptors TRANSDUCE one form of energy to electrical energy. Electroreception doesn’t as the energy is already electrical.
suggest why electroreception has evolved in water animals but not in land
water conducts electricity quite well, but air is not vary conductive
explain the events that occur in the P Cs between the onset of deformation to the generation of a generator potential
pressure is added, membrane deforms, deformation causes a a conformational change in Na+ channels, which open and Na+ enters the cell down its electrochemical gradient. This depolarises the cell.
compare structure of a sensory neurone and relay neurone:
sensory neurone has a cell body, a long dendron that receives signals from RECEPTOR cells and a long axon that carries signals to the CNS. the relay neurone has a cell body with many short, highly branched dendrites, and a short, highly branched axon.
