Neuron Flashcards
Chemicals that transmit nerve impulses between neurons.
Neurotransmitter
Contains the nucleus(also called the soma)
Neurons Cell Body(Cyton)
A special type of cell organelle, that acts as the cells “control center”. It contains the cell’s genetic information in the form of DNA chemicals packaged into chromosomes.
Nucleus
A nerve cell that carries sensory information(like sound, touch, taste, smell, or sight) to the central nervous system.
Sensory Neuron
A structure where an impulse passes from one neuron to another across a gap.
Synapse
Transmit nerve impulses from other cells or sensory systems.
Dendrites
The long extension of a neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body.
Axon
The hair-like endings of the axon.
Axon Terminals
Interrupt the muesli sheath where the axon is in direct contact with surrounding intercellular fluid.
Node of Ranvier
The synapse is located at the end of each axonal end branch. Here the end branch forms a small button-like knob, referred to as the _____.
Synaptic Knobs
The supporting cells associated with axons. They are a variety of glial cell that keep peripheral nerve fibers(both myelinated and unmyelinated) alive.
Schwann Cell
An electrically-insulating dielectric materials that forms a layer.
Myelin Sheath
A cylindrical, multinucleate cell composed of numerous myofibrils that contracts when stimulated.
Muscle Fiber
The neurotransmitter acetylcholine is launched from sac-like vessels across the synapse to receptors.
