Human Respiratory System Flashcards
Master terms of the Human Respiratory System
a channel for airflow through the nose
Nasal passage
The external opening of the nose; also called the nares
Nostrils
The upper opening of the digestive tract, beginning with the lips and containing the teeth, gums, and tongue.
Mouth
The flap that covers the TRACHEA during swallowing, so that food does not enter the lungs
Epiglottis
A tub-shaped organ in the neck that contains the vocal cords.
Humans use this to breathe, talk and swallow.
Located between PHARYNX and TRACHEA
Larynx
A tub-like portion of the respiratory tract that connects the LARYNX with the BRONCHIAL parts of the lungs; also known as windpipe
Trachea
A large air tube that begins at the end of the TRACHEA and branches into the LUNGS. The supporting walls are made up in part of cartilage.
Bronchi (plural of Bronchus)
The tiny branch of air tubes within the lungs that is a continuation of the BRONCHUS. They connect to the ALVEOLI (air sacs).
Bronchiole
Tiny air sacs within the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place.
Alveoli (plural of Alveolus)
The muscle that separates the chest (thoracic) cavity from the abdomen.
The main muscle of respiration.
Diaphragm
The hollow tube that is about 5 inches long and starts behind the nose and ends at the top of the TRACHEA (windpipe) and esophagus.
Serves as a vestibule or entryway for the TRACHEA and esophagus.
Pharynx
The main organs of the respiratory system that have the function of transporting oxygen from the air into the blood and removing carbon dioxide from the blood; located in the chest, one on the left and one on the right.
Lung
One of the two membranes around the lungs. These two membranes are called the visceral and parietal.
