Neuron Flashcards
What are the three functions of the nervous system?
- Sensory Input
- Integration
- Motor output
What is the purpose of sensory input
Monitor changes (stimuli) throughout the body as a result of the sensory information captured by the nervous system
What is the purpose of integration
The nervous system processes the stimuli it receives in order to issue a reaction that is most appropriate for the problem at hand
What is the purpose of motor output?
Stimulates the body to react in a certain way to the stumulus. This can be an increased heart rate or breathing rate. This is done via initiating the production of hormones from the muscles or glands.
Describe the difference between white matter and gray matter in the brain
- Gray matter: Made up of UN-myelinated axons.
- White matter: Made up of myelinated axons.
what type of cell in the nervous system causes cancer and why?
The neuroglial cells produce cancer because they’re the only ones that can divide (perform mitosis) unlike neuron which can’t.
Which types of nervous cells are multipolar, bipolar, and unipolar?
- Motor: Multipolar
- Sensory: Unipolar
- Interneuron: Bipolar
Function of the astrocyte
- maintain chemical environment in brain
- Separates blood from the brainl forms barrier-caoillaries, neurons
