Epithelium Flashcards
1
Q
What is the epithelium?
A
One of the four main classes of tissues that is primarily responsible for forming glands and lining the outside and inside of the body.
2
Q
What are the basic parts of the epithelium
A
- Basement membrane- The anchor of epithelial cells
- Polarity- Apical & basal surfaces
3
Q
Describe the unique characteristics of the epithelium
A
- Avascular- no blood vessels membranes; Capillaries are situated nearby and transfer nutrients via diffusion
- High regeneration capacity
4
Q
Name and describe the two main types of epithelial tissue
A
- Glandular: Forms tissues
- Covering (Lining): Envelopes internal organs and structures and external body
5
Q
What types of junctions hold epithelial cells together?
A
- Tight junctions: Prevents leakage or passing of substances
- Desmosomes: Anchors and connects cells together
6
Q
Name all types of epithelial tissue
A
- Simple squamous
- Simple columnar
- Simple cuboidal
- Stratified squamous (Keratinized/non-keratinized)
- Transitional (Urinary)
- Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
7
Q
Describe the classifications of epithelial tissue
A
- # of layers: Stratified, simple, pseudostratified
- Shape: Cuboidal, Squamous, Columnar
- Specialization: job, function (if any)
8
Q
Describe the functions of simple squamous tissue
A
- Diffusion: Thin and vast structure structure allows for easy exchange of materials
- Filtration: Layer acts as a barrier that filters certain substances
- Lubrication: Contains goblet cells that secrete mucus to reduce friction
9
Q
Describe the locations of simple squamous tissue
A
- Alveoli (air sacs of lungs)
- Body cavities (pericardium, pleural cavity, and peritoneal cavity)
- Heart
- Blood Vessels
- Lymphatic vessels
10
Q
Describe the functions of simple cuboidal tissue
A
- Absorption: Large cytoplasmic volume allows for efficient and high consumption of substances
- Secretion: large structure contains structures involved in secretion; often found in glandular tissues
11
Q
Describe the locations of simple cuboidal tissue
A
- Lines kidney tubules & glands ducts
- Ovaries
