Neuron Flashcards
Neuron
A type of cell that receives and sends messages from the body to the brain and back to the body
Axon
portion of a nerve cell (neuron) that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
Dendrite
Dendrites are the small branched extensions of nerve cells that transport nerve impulses from synapses to the cell body (Receives information)
Autonomic nervous system
a network of nerves throughout your body that control unconscious processes
Sympathetic nervous system
network of nerves that helps your body activate its “fight-or-flight” response
Parasympathetic nervous system
relaxes your body after periods of stress or danger
Blood flow through heart
Blood comes into the right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. After picking up oxygen, the blood travels back to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium, to the left ventricle and out to the body’s tissues through the aorta
Arteries
Carry oxygen rich blood away from the heart
Veins
Carry oxygen poor blood to the heart
Puberty
The time in your life when your body is undergoing the most changes especially in your brain
Peripheral Nervous System
is made up of nerves that branch off from the spinal cord and extend to all parts of the body: sends information to different parts of your body
Somatic nervous system
a subdivision of your peripheral nervous system which allows you to move and control muscles throughout your body
Depressant
reducing functional or nervous activity
Stimulant
a substance that raises levels of physiological or nervous activity in the body
Hypothalamus
helps manage your hunger and thirst
