Neuromuscular system Flashcards
Muscle spindles
Stetch receptors within a skeletal muscle.
Detects change in muscle length.
Golgi Tendon Organ
A type of sensory receptor.
Detects change in muscle tension.
Stages of the stretch reflex
- Muscle spindle detects increase in muscle length.
- Impulse sent to the CNS.
- Impulse sent back to the muscle (causing a contraction).
Role of the stretch reflex
Prevents overstretching and injury.
What is PNF
A stretching technique used to increase flexibility/ range of motion
What are the stages of PNF
- Stretch for 8-10 seconds
- Isometrically contract the muscle
- Stretch for 8-10 seconds again
(Further range of motion will be created)
What is muscle innervation
Signals/ impulses from motor neurones that casue muscles to contract
What is a motor unit
Motor neurones and muscle fibres that innervate to cause contraction
What is the all or none law
The amount of impulses must exceed the threshold of stimulation to cause a contraction
What is a muscle twitch contraction
A small amount of impulse used to maintain posture
What is a wave summation contraction
Impulses adding together to create a larger force of contraction
What is a spatial summation contraction
Impulses down multiple motor neurones to produce a large force of contraction
