Cause of blackouts?
Syncope, epilepsy, non-eplieptic attack, NEAD
What is syncope?
Postural hypotension w/ preceding symptoms
What would you expect to see in non-epileptic attack?
Movement and frequency can change
Often jerking
What is tonic-clonic seizure?
Tonic - rigid, clonic = jerky
What is status epilepticus and how manage?
Continuous or recurrent seizure - incomplete recovery in between
Last >5 mins
High mortality - risk hypoxic brain injury
Manage
ABCD - 999
Benzodiazepine - buccal/IM midazolam 10mg
AEDs - anti-epileptic drug
What is focal weakness, management and causes?
Sudden collapse - unable to weak w/ weakness
Cause: stroke, interrupted blood supply to brain
Priority - transfer hospital immediately
Tx of acute stroke - hospital tx?
- Mechanical thrombectomy
- IV thrombolysis - if arrive 4 hours
- Oral antiplatlets
Need to be sent for CT scan and assess for suitability for thrombolysis/ thrombectomy
Use of CT scan in strokes?
To see if ischaemic or haemorrhaic
If RHS weakness - LHS infarct
Can’t pick up stroke in acute window
