Neurology: Brain Anatomy and Physiology Flashcards
What is the anterior arterial supply to the brain?
2 x internal carotid arteries ->
2 x anterior cerebral arteries (ACA)
2 x middle cerebral arteries (MCA)
What is the posterior arterial supply to the brain?
2 x vertebral arteries -> 1 basilar ->
3 pairs of cerebellar arteries +
2 x posterior cerebral arteries (PCA)
How is the Circle of Willis connection (anastomosed)?
Via anterior and posterior communicating arteries
Where does the MCA supply?
Temporal lobes (laterally), insular cortexes
Which part of the brain is responsible for recognising fans and where is it?
Fusiform gyrus
Broadman area 37 - occipitotemporal
What is the main blood supply to the basal ganglia?
Middle cerebral artery
What structures are affected in a posterior circulation occlusion?
Brain stem, cerebellum, thalamus, occipital and medial temporal lobes
Where is CSF produced?
Choroid plexus
Where is choroid plexus mainly located?
In the lateral ventricles, posterior 3rd ventricle roof, caudal 4th ventricle roof
What is the route of CSF?
From lateral ventricle -> Foramen of Munro -> 3rd ventricle -> cerebral aqueduct -> 4th ventricle -> Formaina of Luschka/Foramen of Magendie -> through subarachnoid space to surround the brain and spine -> arachnoid granulations along dural venous sinuses and into venous system
What type of process is CSF production?
Metabolically active process which uses ATP
Which type of process is CSF reabsorption?
Passive process driven by pressure gradient between intracranial space ICP and venous system CVP
