- Decrease GCS, collapse (GCS <8)
- Headache
- Nausea & vomiting
- Hypertension/bradycardia
- Tachypnoea
Explain how to conduct a MASS/STROKE assessment
Facial droop - Get pt to smile, show teeth, looking for any signs of facial droop, lips or under eyes, eyebrow (common) - one side of face does not move
Speech - get pt to remember & repeat phrase, ‘ You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ –> slurred speech, incorrect words, unable to speak.
Grip strength - Get pt to reach out, squeeze fingers, pull me towards them, push me away, Do similar to legs, - Looking for unilateral weakness.

Complete MASS assessment
assess arms
Sit pt, get pt to hold out both arms out,
If one arm falls or only one moves within 10secs.
Right arm- look for speech impediment
Left arm - ‘tap test’ - stand on left side, tap L shoulder - assess - abnormal response or eye deviation to Right
