Neurology Flashcards
What are the two functional classifications of the nervous system?
Afferent - sensory system (has somatic, visceral, and proprioceptive divisions)
Efferent - motor system (has somatic and visceral divisions)
What is the neurotransmitter for the general somatic efferent nerves?
Acetylcholine
Steps of neurotransmission for general somatic efferent nerves?
- Action potential reaches terminal
- Voltage gated Ca channels open
- Synaptic vesicles fuse with terminal membrane
- Acetylcholine released into synaptic cleft
- Acetylcholine binds to receptors
- Ligand-gated Na/K channels open —> end plate potential
- Acetylcholinesterase degrades acetylcholine
The general somatic efferent nerves include all cranial nerves EXCEPT
I and II
What is the function of the general somatic afferent system?
Detect temperature, touch, nociception
What is the function of the general proprioceptive system?
Detect position and movement in muscles and joints
A lesion anywhere in a reflex arc will lead to __ reflexes.
Decreased
A spinal cord lesion cranial to a reflex arc can lead to __ reflexes
increased
