Cranial Nerve (Function)
I. Olfactory nerve carries sensory fibres for the sense of smell
II. Optic nerve carries sensory fibres for vision, from the retina of the eye to the visual cortex of the brain
III. Oculomotor nerve provides motor innervation to a number of the extraocular muscles of the eye and controls pupil dilation and constriction
IV. Trochlear nerve provides motor innervation to the superior oblique muscle only, which is an extraocular muscle of the eye
V. Trigeminal nerve is a mixed nerve carrying both sensory and motor innervation. It is the primary sensory nerve for the face and anterior scalp, and the motor nerve for the muscles of mastication and other small muscles
VI. Abducens nerve is another motor nerve that provides motor innervation to the extraocular muscles of the eye, specifically the lateral rectus muscle
VII. Facial nerve is another mixed nerve. It provides motor innervation to the muscle of facial expression. I also carries sensory fibres form the anterior two-thirds of the tongue to the brain
VIII. Vestibulocochlear nerve carries sensory fibres for hearing and balance
IX. Glossopharyngeal nerve is a mixed nerve that transmits sensory and motor innervation for throat sensation, taste, and swallowing
X. Vagus nerve is the most widely distributed through the body and consists of both motor and sensory innervation. It provides movement, sensation, and abdominal organs
XI. Accessory nerve provides motor innervation to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the trapezius muscle (allows neck movement)
XII. Hypoglossal nerve provides motor innervation to the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue (allows tongue movement)
