Neurological Diagnosis: Somato-Sensory System Flashcards
Topognosis
Inability to identify multiple points when touched with the dull end of a neurotip
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Point Localization
Inability to identify multiple points when touched with the dull end of a neurotip
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Stereognosis
Inability to identify familiar objects by sense of touch
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Graphesthesia
Inability to identify numbers or letters traced lightly on the skin
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Barognosis
Inability to identify the difference between 2 same sized objects of different weights
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Double Simultaneous Stimulation of the Upper Extremity
Inability to identify the location they are being touched on the upper extremity
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Double Simultaneous Stimulation of the Lower Extremity
Inability to identify the location be are being touched on the lower extremity
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Extinction
Only one side is felt during double simultaneous stimulation test
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Displacement
One side is felt normally while the other is displaced toward midline during the double simultaneous stimulation test
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
Synesthesia
One side is felt normally and the other is perceived as a vague burning during the double simultaneous stimulation test
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex
2-Point Discrimination Test
Inability to determine the smallest area in which two points can separately be perceived
Indicates: Lesion of the somatosensory cortex or dorsal column medial lemniscus
