How is CN 1 tested?
Note changes in smell
Note parosmia - pleasurable smell, becomes disgusting
Note anosmia - partial or full loss of smell
How is CN 2 tested?
Test reading from close and far
How is CN 3 tested?
PEARLA
How is CN 4 tested?
Small H test?
How is CN 5 tested?
Stroke 3 parts of the face, and clench jaw
How is CN 6 tested?
Full H test?
Issues will cause double vision
How is CN 7 tested?
Facial symmetry:
- Puff, and put resistance on the cheeks
- Frown
How is CN 8 tested?
Whisper letters and numbers and ask patient to repeat
How is CN 9 and CN X tested?
Open mouth and say ‘ahhh’: the uvula should remain midline, and the palate should elevate
Issues would cause air to escape from nose, when cheeks are puffed out
How is CN XI tested?
- Turn the head against resistance
- shrug shoulders against resistance
How is XII tested?
- Stick tongue out, which remains midline
- dysphasia and dysarthia
