Neuroimaging Flashcards
Neuroimaging techniques
X-rays, CT, MRI, Cerebral Angiography, Myelography, Nuclear Medicine.
CT scanning
Don’t see fine detail. Quick, used in emergencies. Can be 3D. Good for seeing bone and calcification.
CTA (A for angiography) scans
Contrast good for showing arterial system.
Basal Ganglia and associated nuclei
Caudate nucleus,
Putamen,
Globus pallidus,
Subthalamic nucleus,
Substantia nigra
What is the lenticular nucleus
Putamen and globus pallidus
Striatum (neostriatum)
Caudate nucleus and putamen
Corpus striatum
Caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus
MRI Hazards
Projectile effect (magnetic materials will get attracted very quickly)
Heat (metal and tissue heat v quickly, not dissimilar to microwave)
Pacemakers, metallic objects, electric devices
MRI causing peripheral nerve stimulation
Induced currents in body may be large enough to send impulse down peripheral nerves causing pain/tingling
