Neuroglial Cells Of The CNS Flashcards
Types of neuroglial cells
Astrocytes
Oligodendocytes
Microgelia
Ependymal
Neuroglial cells
Supportive cells that outnumber neurons 5:1.
Form half of the mass of the brain. Continue to multiply throughout life.
Gliomas
Tumors formed by neuroglial cells
Astrocytes
Most abundant cells.
Induce the endothelial cells during embryonic development.
Transport nutrients to the neurons from the capillaries.
Blood brain barrier
Restricts the permeability of the capillaries, preventing harmful components entering CNS.
Oligodendeocytes
Wrap up to 50 axons.
Produces abundance of myelin which produces skinny white appearance in the White matter.
Multiple sclerosis
Demyelination within the brain and or spinal cord.
May be related to injury of the oligodendrocytes.
Microgelia
Smallest and least numerous of the neuroglial cells.
Develope from stem cells in the mesoderm of the Red Bone Marrow.
Released from the bone marrow as circulating monocytes that will leave the blood stream to the CNS to serve as tissue macrophages.
Ependymal cells
Form simple ciliated cuboidal or columnar epithelium that line central canal, brain ventricles & spinal cord.
Help form the Choroid Plexuses.
Choroid Plexuses
Found in the Brain ventricles that are responsible for the secretion of Cerobrospinal fluid.
