NeuroEndocrinology Flashcards
What is Neuroendocrinology?
Link between nervous and endocrine systems
Hypothalamic hormones involved in pituitry regulation are ?
tropic hormones (hormones that stimulate/maintain their target tissues).
TRH / Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone
Stimulates release of TSH
CRH / Corticotropin Releasing Hormone
Stimulates release of ACTH
GnRH Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone
Stimulates release of FSH & LH
GHRH / Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone
Stimulates release of growth hormone
GHIH / Growth Hormone Inhibiting Hormone /Somatostain
Inhibits release of growth hormone and TSH
PRH / Prolactin Releasing Hormone
Stimulates release of Prolactin
PIH / Dopamine / Prolactin Inhibiting Hormone
Inhibits release of Prolactin
TSH/ Thyroid stimulating hormone
Stimulates secretion of Thyroid Hormone
Adrenocroticotropic hormone / ACTH
Stimulates secretion of cortisol by adrenal cortex
Follicle Stimulating Hormone / FSH
In females–growth & development of ovarian follicles, secretion of estrogen
In males–required for sperm production
Luteinizing Hormone / LH
In females–responsible for ovulation & luteinization, regulates ovarian secretion of female sex hormones.
In males stimulates testosterone secretion.
Growth Hormone / GH
Primary hormone responsible for regulating overall body growth, involved in metabolism, stimulates IGF-1 secretion
Vasopressin / ADH/ AVP
Enhances water retention by kidneys
Regulated by osmoreceptors in hypothalamus
Works with CRH on stress response
