A mental status characterized by an acute disturbance of cognition which is manifested by short term confusion, excitement, disorientation, and a clouding of consciousness.
Delirium
A disease process in which there is progressive decline in cognitive ability in the presence of clear consciousness.
Dementia
Difficulties with instrumental activities of daily living (housework, managing money)
Severity: Mild
Difficulties with basic activities of daily living (feeding or dressing)
Severity: Moderate
Fully dependant
Severity: Severe
When an individual does not speak at all
aphasia
Misuse of an object because of failure to identify them.
apraxia
Occurs in stage 4: moderate cognitive decline and defined as creating imaginary events to fill in memory gaps
confabulation
Occurs in stage 6: Severe cognitive decline and is defined as when symptoms seem to worsen in the late afternoon or evening
Sundowning
Also known as “depression” and is common in elderly and often misdiagnosed.
Pseudodementia
Inability to remember names of things
Anomia
Inability to recognize familiar objects, tastes, sounds, and other sensations.
