what are neurocognitive disorders?
a group of acquired disorders that indicate a decline in mental functioning
Delirium
temporary condition categorized by confusion and disorientation
dementia
progressive and degenerative condition marked by gradual and broad cognitive deterioration
5 diagnostic criteria for delirium
- disturbance in attention/awareness
- disturbance develops over a short period of time
- additional disturbance in cognition
- 1 and 3 are not better explained by another neurocognitive disorder
- evidence that disturbance is a consequence of medical condition/substance/withdrawal*
acute
lasting a few hours or days
persistent
lasting a few weeks or months
MND 4 diagnostic criteria
- significant cognitive decline
- deficits interfere in independence
- deficits don’t occur exclusively in a delirium
- deficits aren’t better explained by another disorder
Is dementia a diagnosis in the DSM 5?
no, now under major and mild neurocognitive disorders
