Neuroanatomy - Trigeminal nerve Flashcards
How many of the cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem
10 out of 12
Where does the trigeminal nerve emerge from
The pons (part of the brainstem)
What does the sensory root form
The trigeminal ganglion
Whats the trigeminal ganglion formed by
The sensory root
When does the motor root join V3
After it exits the skull
What sensations do the ganglion convey
- Pain
- Temperature
- Touch
- Proprioception
Where does the trigeminal ganglion lie
Petrous part of the temporal bone in middle cranial fossa
Where does the opthalmic nerve leave
Superior orbital fissure
Where does the maxillary nerve leave
Foramen rotundum
Where does the mandibular nerve leave
Foramen ovale
What divisions does the
- V1 - Ophthalmic nerve
- V2 – Maxillary nerve
- V3 – Mandibular nerve
Describe the opthalmic nerve (V1)
- All V1 nerves are sensory
- Supplies the orbit, eye, and skin in the anterior aspects of the upper head + eyelid
- Supplies parts of the nasal cavity,
paranasal sinuses, and skin along
the centre of the nose
Describe the maxillary nerve (V2)
- All V2 nerves are sensory
- Supplies the general sensory supply to the upper teeth, gingivae and nearby structures
- Supplies the hard and soft palates and the central part of the skin of the face
- Leaves cranial cavity via the foramen rotundum
Describe the branches of the V2 in the pterygopalatine fossa
- Theres 2 ganglionic branches that suspend the pterygopalatine ganglia from the maxillary nerve
- Where pre-ganglionic parasympathetic nerve cells synapse with the cell bodies of post-ganglionic nerve cells
- Maxillary nerve fibres pass through the pterygopalatine ganglion
Describe the greater palatine nerves
- Carry nerve fibres inferiorly onto the hard palate
- Emerges through the greater palatine foramen
