neuroanatomy practical Flashcards
Identify the 5 major brain divisions
Telencephalon
diencephalon
mesencephalon
metencephalon
myelencephalon
Describe the flow of csf
choroid plexus, lateral ventricle, foramen of monro, 3rd ventricle, cerebral aqueduct, 4th ventricle
Which cranial nerves do not originate from the brainstem? From what major brain division
(telencephalon etc) do they originate?
Olfactory Nerve
2 Optic Nerve
Name the 3 frontal gyri and identify broca’s area
superior frontal gyrus
middle frontal gyrus
inferior frontal gyrus (Broca)
The primary somatomotor cortex and somatosensory cortex are relatively easy to identify (where are they?).
Try and localize the primary auditory cortex and indicate its position in figure 4. Do the same for the primary visual cortex.
Primary Somatomotor cortex: precentral gyrus
Primary Somatosensory cortex: postcentral gyrus
Primary auditory cortex: superior temporal gyrus
Primary visual cortex: calcarine sulcus
Identify the basal ganglia components that are visible in the preparation. What are the 5 (major
components?
- Caudate nucleus
- Putamen
- Globus pallidus
- Subthalamic nucleus
- Substantia nigra
At what vertebral level (thoracic, lumbar etc) would you perform a liquor/CSF puncture?
Lumbar puncture (L3,L4)
