Q

Which nerve gives sensory innervation to the face, and what are the divisions? Where does each division give innervation?

A

Trigeminal nerve gives sensory innervation to the face.
Ophthalmic division: to the forehead and top of the head
Maxillary division: to the cheeks, nose and upper lip
Mandibular division: to the chin, and a thin strip in front of ears to the temples.

Q

How do you determine of locations the thoracic spinal root dermatomes on the chest wall by using body landmarks?

A

The thoracic dermatomes appear as bands across the chest wall. T7 is the level of the xyphoid process, T10 is at the level of the umbilicus (belly button), then L1 is at the inguinal ligament, so you can count down to T12 above the inguinal ligament.
The higher thoracic dermatomes across the chest are fairly horizontal, but the lower ones angle inferiorly, t12 is at about 45degrees to the midline.

Q

Describe the course of dermatome L5

A

It’s is a strip running from a high region of the buttocks posteriorly, down the most lateral part of the thigh, curving to run as a strip down the most anterior part of the lower leg and then over the superior part of the foot, including toes 2, 3 and 4. It also wraps under to give sensation to the central part of the base of the foot.

Q

Describe the course of dermatome L4

A

It’s a strip running from a high region of the buttocks posteriorly, curving round the lateral thigh to pass over the kneecap anteriorly. It then continues down while crossing over to the medial aspect of the lower leg. It innervates the medial anterior foot and the big toe.

Q

What is the spinal root level for the Achilles Tendon reflex?

A

S1

19
Q

Describe the course of dermatome s1

A

S1 travels as a strip up the backs of the legs. The lateral half of the sole of the foot is s1, as is most of the heel. Then there is a strip up the backs of the legs - the lateral half of it is s1 and the medial half is s2. S1 carries on up to arch over the top of the buttocks.

20
Q

Describe the course of dermatome s2

A

S2 is a strip that rises up the backs of the legs. It starts just above and posterior to the medial malleolus, then travels up the legs: the medial half of the most posterior part of the legs. S2 then carries on up to form an arch on the buttocks, under the arch of s1.
