What is the most common cause of each of the following: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy Dilated cardiomyopathy Restrictive cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: hypertension
Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy: congenital
Dilated cardiomyopathy: ischaemia
Restrictive cardiomyopathy: infiltrative disease
What are the 4 main types of Cardiomyopathies (discussed in PB lecture?
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM)
Dilated cardiomyopathy
Restrictive cardiomyopathy
What are the similarities and differences in the common presentations of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and HOCM?
Both commonly first present with syncope (fainting).
Other common symptoms are angina pain and palpitations.
Both can have an S4 heart sound.
Only HOCM has a systolic crescendo decrecendo murmur in the aortic region (like aortic stenosis murmur).
Only HOCM can present as sudden death on exertion.
How does dilated cardiomyopathy present?
SOB on exertion (Dyspnoea). Left heart failure signs, wheezing,
s3 heart sound.
How does restrictive cardiomyopathy present?
Severe SOB, left and right heart failure, kussmaul sign, ascites, edema.
