neuro:vision Flashcards
what are the different views of the eye?
-temporal (it’s named for the temporal bone) and nasal view since it’s next to the nose.
how is the eye kept rigid?
- the eye consists of the sclera which is around the entire eye
- at the front, the collagen fibres and cells that make up the outer layer are lined in a way that makes that structure transparent- cornea.
-sclera is flexible (it dimples). - to keep it rigid you have intraocular pressure
how is intraocular pressure generated?
- by the production of aqueous humour.
- aqueous humour is produced by the ciliary body and it flows outwards, eventually being reabsorbed.
-As long as rhe aqueous humour is produced and removed at a balance, it will provide just enough aqueous pressure to hold your eye rigid.
what is the vitreous?
-jelly like structure
-hydrated by the aqueous
- as you grow older, the vitreous starts to clump producing watery patches, starts to shrink down. Creates fuzzy floaters.
explain the optics of the eye?
the light goes from air to a watery environment, and due to this and the curve of the eye, it shines the light inwards.
This structure can also change shape which also changes the focus of your eye.
how is the lens positioned in the eye?
-the lens is suspended by a ring of suspensory ligaments from the ciliary body.
-the ciliary body can change the shape of the lens, bc it contains a ring of muscle, when it contracts it’s diameter becomes smaller, therefore the lens becomes fatter.
-this is how you adjust the focus of the lens for closer vision.
