Muscle Stretch Reflex
Grading Reflexes 4. 3. 2. 1. 0.
- Very brisk with clonus
- Brisker than average. Possibly indicates disease
- Average/normal
- Diminished. Low normal.
- Absent
Reinforcement
Technique that involves isometric contraCtion of other muscles for up to 10 seconds
Biceps Reflex
C5, C6
Strike: biceps tendon
Watch for: contraction of biceps muscle
Triceps Reflex
C6, C7
Strike: back of elbow
Watch for contraction of triceps muscle and extension of elbow
Brachioradialis Reflex
C5, C6
Strike: radius, 1-2” above wrist
Watch for: flexion and supination of firearm
Patellar Reflex
(Quadriceps Reflex)
L2, L3, L4
Strike: Patellar tendon just below patella
Watch for: quadriceps contraction with extension at knee
Achilles Reflex
S1
Hint: dorsiflex foot at ankle first
Strike: Achilles’ tendon
Watch for: plantar flexion
Abdominal Reflex
Stroke: each side of abdomen above (T8, T9, T10) and below (T10, T11, T12) umbilicus
Watch for: contraction of abdominal muscles, movement of umbilicus toward stimulus
Plantar Response
L5, S1
Stroke: lateral aspect of sole of foot from heel to ball, curving medially
Watch for: plantarflexion
Hint: hold ankle if patient withdraws by flexing hip and knee
Anal Reflex
Lightly scratch anus on both sides
Watch for: contraction of external anal sphincter
